Claire Passmore

I offer online and in person classes and online demo-talks. Please see my website for the most up to date information.

I offer in-person talks:
'Wiltshire White Horses' - based on the series of quilts I made about this fascinating land art. This talk is a mixture of historical anecdotes, tall tales and quilt making and is illustrated with approximately 10 White Horse series of quilts. I also bring a selection of my current work.

'A virtual trip around South Africa' - is based on the series of quilts I made when I lived in South Africa. This talk is a fun and lighthearted story of travels illustrated by approximately 20 quilts. Cheeky ostriches, shoals of fish and gardens of roses to name a few.

'When Your Points Don't Match' - is the story of how I turned from a traditional patchwork quiltmaker into an art quilter. It is illustrated with a selection of over 20 quilts and textile pieces I have made over the years.

My background:

I love to experiment with cloth, thread, dye, paint, ink, wax, screen prints, lino blocks, gelatine plates ..... anything that can modify the fabric I use. The inspiration for my work comes mostly from people, the way they treat each other and the places they live. I exhibit my work all over the world and enjoy making quilts for exhibition as well as pleasure.

In 2015 I hung my first solo exhibition and published my first book, 'Quilting Originals' in which I describe my methods for creating original art quilts. In 2017 I became a Juried Artist member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) and in 2020 I joined the SAQA Board of Directors.
I also love to teach both online via live and recorded video and also travelling to work in person with groups and individuals. In 2019 I travelled to China as a guest speaker and tutor at the 5th International Quilt Symposium, Kequio.

I like to gather and develop the designs for my quilts in sketchbooks, where I explore and experiment with different ideas and techniques. I have a growing 'library' of sketchbooks which I am happy to share and explain how they can be used as inspiration for your own work. I also have a blog where I share news of what I am currently making and ideas for things you might like to try yourself.
